NVQ Level 2-3

Course Aim:

This qualification is offered in conjunction with the National Diploma and First Diploma programme.  The course provides an excellent training opportunity for those wishing to pursue a career involving racehorses.  Students have the option of progressing to the NVQ Level 3 Award.  This programme provides Enniskillen Campus students with excellent ‘hands on’ opportunities in all aspects of racehorses care and is based in the racing yard at Enniskillen Campus.

Course content

NVQ Level 2

Main areas of study:

  • Providing routine care
  • Determining health and condition
  • Preparing horses for use and handling at the races
  • Working horses from the ground
  • Assisting with transport

NVQ Level 3

Main areas of study:

  • Monitoring routine care and resolving health and condition problems
  • Transporting horses
  • Preparing horses for work
  • Contributing to the planning, organisation and evaluation of their work

Study Tours

Study tours are an integral part of the equine programmes at the Campus and provide students with the opportunity to see the latest technology, to increase their awareness of facilities and diagnostic services available and to make contacts within the equine industry.


Most course participants should be able to take on the role of a senior lad/lass in a racing yard or a stud groom.  NVQ Level 2 students should be able to carry out a wide range of routine tasks relating to the care, use and breeding of racehorses with minimum supervision.
